CC BEC 2.0 – The Next Generation of Voltage Regulators (BEC) from Castle Creations!

From the trusted manufacturer of BECs comes the next generation of voltage regulators.  Designed and assembled in the USA1, Castle Creations’ CC BEC 2.0 gives users higher voltage ranges in two unique packages.   For pilots there is a smaller, lightweight (0.7 oz.) design capable of 14 amps peak, perfect for sport flying, helicopters, and UAVsRacers, crawlers, and other splashers can now integrate a 15 amp peak power regulator in a waterproof (WP), CNC machined, aluminum case.  Both versions handle up to an impressive 14S without brake enabled or 12S with brake.

The CC BEC 2.0 complements our established line of BECs hobbyists have relied on for years.  With hundreds of thousands in the field, users can count on this new design to power today’s high-power, digital servos and accessories safely.  The CC BEC 2.0 features heavy duty, dual output wires that will provide clean power to sensitive radio equipment. Castle Link2 can be used to set the output from 4.75 to 12 volts and power today’s power hungry servos, cameras, and other accessories.   Do it right the first time, invest in the CC BEC 2.0 to protect expensive electronics for the long haul.

Castle Creations Embraces New FAA Regulations

Drone outside building

Olathe KS, June 23, 2016 – Castle Creations, the leader in electronic drive solutions for unmanned aircraft systems, welcomes the new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulation announced this week. The new rules will make it easier for American businesses, farmers, nonprofits and government agencies to use drones in their work.

Tuesday, the Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration finalized the first operation rules for routine commercial use of small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS or “drones”), opening pathways towards fully integrating drones into the nation’s airspace.

“These new regulations open up a world of exciting possibilities for not only Castle Creations, but our commercial customers as well. We are quite pleased that the FAA is forming a more accepting policy in the industry,” said Castle Creation’s President Jonathan Feldkamp.

The new rule (outlined here) will become effective in 60 days, replacing the current FAA scheme that requires commercial drone operators to spend months waiting for an FAA exemption and to employ a pilot with a manned aircraft license from the FAA. It offers safety regulations for unmanned aircraft drones weighing less than 55 pounds that are conducting non-hobbyist operations.

The tough regulations have been a thorn in the side of business owners for years and have made it difficult for them to take a deeper dive into the benefits of utilizing drones in the industry.

“The innovative work we will be able to provide for our customers is endless,” said Brian O’Donnell, Director of Sales and Marketing for Castle Creations. “Our customers in the agriculture, energy and rescue industries are very excited about these new rules and what it is going to do for their bottom line. Castle Creations is excited about this growing opportunity and pleased to be a part of it.”

According to industry estimates, the rule could generate more than $82 billion for the U.S. economy and create more than 100,000 new jobs over the next 10 years.

For Castle Creations’ customers, it couldn’t be better timing. This week Castle Creations has released a firmware update that gives our commercial customers some much needed features such as reverse thrust and improved failure recovery technology. This will be followed by a release for FPV racers and a new platform shortly thereafter. Castle Creations continues to invest in R&D that will lead the industry for years to come.

New Product Announcement – X-BUS Telemetry Link

tlxbus6002

In this day and age, we all know RC is not just one way communication anymore. Telemetry advancements are rapidly emerging and Castle has collaborated with the radio experts at Futaba® and Spektrum® to release two incredibly useful and easy to use Telemetry products. Air and Surface enthusiasts now have a means to receive and view telemetry data on compatible Spektrum® radios when using their favorite Castle ESC’s.*

The Castle Telemetry Links were developed based on communication protocol from Spektrum®.  They become a communication module between the Castle ESC and the radio receiver and/or telemetry module where they are attached. The Castle ESC is then easily programmed through Castle Link ™ to allow the bidirectional communication required to transmit data to the radios.

When setup and utilized properly, real-time data will aid in the overall enjoyment and safe operation of model airplanes, helicopters, and cars. Imagine the benefits of being notified by a configured vibration or sound alert when a defined threshold is exceeded, such as battery voltage, battery current or ESC temperature. Pilots can now react and avoid potentially costly repairs as well as gain insight into other parameters that can reduce the performance of an electric power system, such as excessive ripple voltage.

Let’s face it, a modeler’s time and energy should be devoted to enjoying their craft. Telemetry is a powerful addition to any RC enthusiast’s tool box and provides confidence to maximize model performance and gain the competitive edge.

Compatibility Parameters

Compatible Castle ESC* The ESC must have the ability to accept a bidirectional communication protocol that gives it the ability to transmit real-time telemetry feedback. This feature is called Link Live™ and needs to be enabled on compatible ESC’s using Castle Link™. Click here to view the Castle ESC Compatibility Chart.  (Telemetry is not compatible when using multirotor mode on AIR ESCs)
Compatible Spektrum AirWare Radio AirWare supports bidirectional communication. It is also necessary to utilize a compatible Spektrum Telemetry Module.  Compatible radio’s: DX6G2, DX6G3, DX7, DX8G2, DX9, DX10t, DX18, DX18QQ, DX18G2, DX18t

Talon HV120 and Castle Link Update

Talon 120HVIf you happen to be one of the owners of the new Talon HV120, you may see a strange pop-up window when trying to connect to the Castle Link. This is what it will look like.

Talon_warning_screen

The ESC is still fully programmable and works with 100% functionality on the Castle Link. This pop-up is simply informing you that firmware updates are disabled for the Talon HV120. This is because it is a new product line and there is currently only one firmware version available, hence, no updates.

Since you cannot select a different firmware version, the firmware update option has been temporarily disabled. However, when a new version of firmware is released for the Talon HV120, this notification will disappear.

We are currently working on adapting firmware version 4.20 to the Talon HV120. Version 4.20 is the same version current available for the Phoenix Edge and Phoenix Edge HV series ESCs. Once it is available, this update will allow the Talon HV120 to work on high pole count, high inductance out runner motors like the newer Hacker 28-pole out runners.
